Alexandrite was first discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1834. The day on which it was found coincided with Tsar Alexander II of Russia’s sixteenth birthday, and thus, it was given its “royal” name. The stone showed an unusual ability to change color based on lighting conditions. Since that original find, alexandrite has been found in very few locations. Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe have each produced this amazing stone, but out of all of the locations in which these gemstones were mined, Russia’s alexandrite is the most prized. It is the rarest and most valuable since most of the top-quality deposits in Russia appear to be depleted. Many of those top-quality gemstones can now only be found in antique Russian jewelry or Victorian English jewelry. Gem collectors and jewelry designers jump at the chance to grab the better quality alexandrite stones that occasionally appear on the market today.

Of the gemstones in existence today, alexandrite is the only “natural” one that always changes color. The best alexandrite gemstone will be able to change color from emerald/green to purple/red. A stone of this capability is extremely rare, and would be very valuable. The more vivid the color is, the better the stone. Chrysoberyl is similar to alexandrite but does not show as great of a color changing capability. Alexandrite’s ability to change color in light is greater. If a stone shows only slight/faint color change, it is classified as chrysoberyl.
