Iolite: The Guidance Stone

Metaphysically, iolite has been said to increase one’s faith and enhance harmony in relationships. Historically, iolite was used as a navigational tool by the Vikings.  Currently, iolite is being sought after by those who are seeking a cheaper alternative to tanzanite.

Derived from the Greek word “ios,” which means violet, iolite rivals tanzanite and sapphire in rich blue color. Iolite is a difficult stone to cut and is normally a purplish blue color if the gemstone cutter has fashioned it correctly. The deeper the blue color, the better. Iolite has plechroism (appears to be a different color when viewed from different angles). The colors appear as blue to violet to a hint of yellowish gray. Despite being a difficult stone to cut, iolite is available in all of the traditional shapes. Large stones have been found, and iolite can be found in sizes up to five carats or more.

Iolite is a variety of cordierite, and has sometimes been known as water sapphire, cordierite, or dichroite. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on Mohs scale and is great for use in rings, pendants, necklaces, earrings, or bracelets. While sapphire and tanzanite are more popular and better known gemstones, the rich color of the iolite gemstone is making it an increasingly popular choice for many. Additionally, iolite is more affordable than tanzanite or sapphire.

Having been found in Brazil, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, India, and the United States, iolite has an important niche in history. When the Vikings were out at sea with no land in sight and the days were overcast and cloudy, they used iolite as a navigational tool. When they looked through a thin lens which was made of iolite, they were able to calculate exactly where the sun was positioned.

Normal care is required for iolite gemstones. With its rich history and color, matched with an affordable price, this stone is a “must have” for every gemstone collector or jewelry lover.
