Kunzite: For Passion and Peace
In today's fast-paced and hectic world, a soothing gemstone, such as kunzite, is necessary. Kunzite is a gemstone that has the potential to help its wearer overcome anxiety and stress. The soft pink color of kunzite is a comforting sight.
Kunzite has been around since 1902, and was originally found in San Diego County, California. Frederick M. Sickler, shortly after the discovery of the pink colored stone, sent a sample to his friend George Frederick Kunz. Kunz was a gemologist from New York who was with Tiffany and Company. Kunzite was named after Mr. Kunz.
Kunzite, along with hiddenite (which has a greenish color), is a variety of spodumene crystal and is usually found in areas rich with lithium. Kunzite has been discovered in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sweden, and Brazil.
Usually lilac or pinkish in color, kunzite has sometimes appeared colorless, and occasionally some stones show a hint of purple. The color is derived from the manganese content within the stone. Sometimes a kunzite gemstone will have plechroism (color looks different depending on the angle it’s gazed upon). Most kunzite gemstones are light, or pale, in color and sometimes they are heated for color enhancement. Deep colored kunzite gemstones are more rare and valuable. Look for color, then clarity, when determining the value of kunzite.

A kunzite gemstone’s color can fade in extreme lighting conditions. Therefore, it is not recommended to be worn with prolonged exposure to sunlight. It is a gemstone that is better suited to be worn in situations such as dinner parties or evenings out on the town (especially since its soft pink color enhances virtually any wardrobe). Also, ultrasonic cleaning should be avoided.
Kunzite has a 6.5 to 7 hardness rating on Mohs scale and it is not an easy stone to cut. Thus, the stones are usually larger in size and can be found more often set in rings and pendants.
Kunzite is an affordable option to combat a person’s grueling daily routine. It gives its wearer a sense of peace within. It has also, according to some, been known to reduce feelings of anxiety and has helped calm nerves. Kunzite is also a gemstone for two people in love. It aids relationships by keeping emotions balanced with the mind.
