Mystic Topaz: Fire in a Rainbow
A plethora of colors is emitted from the mystic topaz gem stone. Mystic topaz creates a stunning array of colors that will surely draw awe and admiration from those who are not fortunate enough to be wearing it. Sensational and amazing are just a few more of the many adjectives that could be used to describe mystic topaz.
Mystic topaz is not found naturally. It is a treated, or enhanced, gem stone created from natural, clear topaz. Azotic Coating Technologies, Inc. patented the mystic topaz name toward the end of the 1990s. A thin layer of metal, usually titanium, is placed on the underside of the angled portion of natural topaz as a coating. Physical Vapor Deposition is a process which adds the “mystic” nature to the natural topaz. Patents and the application process have helped to limit the amount of mystic topaz on the market today. Only three licensed companies are producing it.
Although it has been around since the late 1990s, mystic topaz really didn’t start to become popular until 2003. Its unique iridescence of a rainbow of colors has stirred interest among many gem enthusiasts. Mystic topaz is fairly inexpensive, but prices are starting to climb. The price of mystic topaz is usually determined by the cut and the carat weight. Currently, an emerald cut appears to be one of the more popular cuts.
Natural topaz has been found in many places. China, Russia, Africa, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico have all produced the gem stone. It has also been found in the United States, and Utah has named natural topaz as its official gem stone.
Mystic topaz is developing many different names. The most commonly used are mystic fire topaz and rainbow mystic topaz. Caribbean topaz, Alaskan topaz, and titanium topaz are a few more names for mystic topaz.
Mystic topaz stones are available in all sizes and the stones are
durable (8.0 on Mohs scale). The titanium adhesive is permanent and will not come off with normal, everyday wear. Nevertheless, you should still exercise caution when cleaning mystic topaz. Do not use ultrasonic cleaning methods or expose it to acids. Keep it away from extreme heat and only use water with mild soap.
Mystic topaz is great for jewelry. A mystic topaz ring, necklace, earrings, or pendant will surely brighten any room in which you enter.
