There are three species of tourmaline: Dravite, Schorl, and Elbaite. Dravites are dark yellow to brown/black. Schorl, which is the most abundant (95% of all tourmaline found), appears bluish or brownish/black to black. Pink tourmaline is an elbaite. Elbaites consist of rubellite, which is pink or light red in color, indicolite, which is dark blue, verdelite (the green ones), and achroite, which is colorless.

While not as rare or expensive as the paraiba tourmaline gemstones, pink tourmaline is still a very popular stone. It can be reddish to light pink in color. Sometimes tourmaline stones are heat treated to improve color. The lithium inside the stone creates the color. A deep red tourmaline gemstone is commonly called a rubellite. It keeps strong, deep red color regardless of lighting conditions. However, if the color changes due to lighting conditions, it is known as pink tourmaline or shocking pink tourmaline.
