Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on the planet. The word “quartz” comes from the Saxon word “querklufterz,” which means cross vein ore. Many colors, or varieties, of quartz can be found. Milky quartz is a murky white, citrine is yellow to orange, rose quartz is pink to red, amethyst is purple, rock crystal is clear, and smoky quartz is brown to gray/black. Sometimes, citrine crystals and smoky quartz crystals are created together and produce bi-colored quartz.
Smoky quartz that is found naturally has usually been in a location where it has had exposure to small amounts of radioactivity over a long period of time. Colorless quartz is sometimes irradiated to form smoky quartz. Extremely dark brown to black smoky quartz is called morion. Coontail quartz is a variety of smoky quartz that has black and white color bands that alternate.
Brazil supplies the majority of the world’s smoky quartz. Other places where smoky quartz has been found are Australia, Madagascar, United States, Switzerland, and Spain. The Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland also yield smoky quartz and it is known as cairngorm.
In some Asian countries, quartz is referred to as topaz. Dark brown quartz has been sold as smoky topaz in the past, but smoky topaz is an incorrect term. Topaz is a different gemstone from quartz. Besides being known as smoky topaz, smoky quartz has been referred to as smoky citrine, smokey quartz, radium diamond, and Colorado diamond. Smoky quartz is the official state gem of New Hampshire in the United States.
In metaphysical terms, smoky quartz has been said to help the kidneys, the pancreas, and the sex organs. Smoky quartz increases fertility and helps remove toxins from the body.
