The discovery of tanzanite gem stones in Tanzania, the one and only place they have ever been found, occurred in 1967. One of the tribesmen who saw a blue crystal showed it to a gem hunter who happened to be in Tanzania searching for rubies at that same time. The gem hunter was Manuel D’Souza. Originally known as blue zoisite, one of the stones ended up in New York, New York. It was shown to the people at Tiffany’s.  Zoisite sounded too much like the word “suicide.” Henry B. Platt of Tiffany’s started calling them tanzanite gem stones, and the company used the new word as the basis of its marketing efforts to sell tanzanite gem stone jewelry.
