Topaz: Color by Numbers
Topaz is a gemstone that occurs in several different colors. Two states in the United States have claimed topaz to be their state gemstone, although the color they have chosen is different. Topaz is also a modern birthstone for three different months of the year, with a different color for each of those months.
At 8.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, topaz is a fairly strong stone. Big name gemstones such as sapphire and diamonds are harder, so topaz ranks right near the top in the durability category. Topaz is a popular gemstone you can wear faceted in any type of jewelry for just about any occasion.
In the United States, Utah has claimed orange topaz as its official state gemstone. Texas, in contrast, has named blue topaz as its official state gemstone.
Of the twelve calendar months of the year, three of the months have topaz as their modern birthstone. One of the modern birthstones for April is white topaz. Secondly, one of November’s modern birthstones is yellow topaz. And finally, one of December’s modern birthstones is blue topaz.
It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Topaz is a gemstone of many colors that you should be happy to see.
