Traditional Birthstones
The traditional birthstones for each month are listed on this page. Many of the traditional birthstones have held on to their associated months and made it to the modern birthstone list, but a few have not. The beauty of gemstones, whether they are from the modern birthstone list or the traditional birthstone list, should be enjoyed by everyone each day of the year.
January’s traditional birthstone is garnet. Garnet is available in many colors, with one of the newest garnets being the green tsavorite garnet. Tsavorite rivals the richest green colors of emeralds.
February’s traditional birthstone is amethyst. Purple power every hour—those who are born in this month will want to wear this non-stop.
March’s traditional birthstone is bloodstone. The name sounds gory, but no human or animal’s blood is part of this stone (well…unless they were hit hard with one—and I strongly discourage anyone from participating in such a horrible act of violence). It is actually the presence of iron that allows bloodstone to possess red spots.
April’s traditional birthstone is diamond. As the toughest gemstone around, the diamond has easily withstood time and made it to the modern birthstone list. Regular ice just melts away, but this ice remains bold and breathtakingly beautiful.
May’s traditional birthstone is emerald. Many a gemstone is green with envy at the emerald’s dominance.
June’s traditional birthstone is alexandrite. Original alexandrite is one of the rarest gemstones and it is usually found in heirloom jewelry. The ability to change colors is a remarkable feat for a gemstone to accomplish, and alexandrite does not disappoint.
July’s traditional birthstone is ruby. Ruby is the queen of the red gemstones and easily has made it to the modern birthstone list, as well. Bow to the beauty of this gemstone.
August’s traditional birthstone is sardonyx. Sardonyx is a banded gemstone. The exquisite color layers these bands provide will easily have you singing. Sardonyx is one of the more unique birthstones in terms of appearance.
September’s traditional birthstone is sapphire. Sapphires provide an elegant, enduring beauty that catches the eye of the beholder. No longer just a blue powerhouse, sapphires are now available in other colors, and any color will capture your heart.
October’s traditional birthstone is tourmaline. The spectrum of colors tourmaline offers is broad. Any broad or dude would love to be wearing jewelry that is accented with a tourmaline gemstone.
November’s traditional birthstone is citrine. Citrine offers a color that ranges from yellow/red to brown/red. “Orange” you glad your birthday is in this month?
December’s traditional birthstone is zircon, turquoise, or lapis lazuli. Blue is the hue for you if December is the month of your birth.
