Diamonds are the strongest gemstones and are rated 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Diamonds possess fire and flash superior to most gemstones. Fancy diamonds are diamonds that are of any color other than clear diamonds. Fancy diamonds occur in many different colors, such as blue, brown, pink, purple, green, and yellow. Although there are other gemstones that occur in fancy colors, such as sapphires, diamonds have the edge in strength and popularity. Yellow sapphires, for instance, are only rated 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness and don’t emit as much sparkle as yellow diamonds. Both are tremendously beautiful gemstones, but if you want more bling, yellow diamonds are your thing.

Yellow diamonds occur naturally, although some diamonds undergo heat treatments to achieve a desired color. The heat treated diamonds are not as expensive, but due to their rarity, natural yellow diamonds will cost more. Also, the more intense their color is, the steeper the price will be for yellow diamonds.

Yellow diamonds are graded by their intensity of color. Faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy intense, fancy vivid, fancy dark, and fancy deep are color classifications that are used to grade them. You may have heard the term “canary diamond.” This is simply a diamond that is deep yellow in color.

The Red Cross is perhaps the largest canary diamond at about 205 carats. The Incomparable is the third largest diamond in the world and weighs just over 407 carats. The Allnatt is a fancy vivid yellow diamond that weighs approximately 100 carats. At 616 carats, the yellow Kimberley Octahedron is possibly the largest uncut diamond in the world.

Yellow diamonds…they can be big, they can be pricey—warm and inviting, even though they’re icy.
